Help OSU’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences build a state-of-the-art Academic Center for its students!

The CVHS is one of only 28 veterinary colleges in the United States and the only veterinary college in Oklahoma. It is fully accredited by the Council on Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association and has graduated more than 3,000 career-ready veterinarians since 1948. To provide the best clinical education for tomorrow’s veterinarians, the Center utilizes faculty specialists in its Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department to offer hands-on experience for third- and fourth-year veterinary students. This clinical training is provided in the Boren Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

The current space in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital is inadequate to effectively fulfill the CVHS teaching mission. The Veterinary Academic Center will house the new, state-of-the-art, 140-seat multimedia-equipped auditorium with Wi-Fi and video conferencing capabilities for distance learning courses. These educational spaces are needed for the progressive clinical education programs required for OSU to maintain and increase faculty and student recruitment and to remain competitive with the nation’s other 27 veterinary colleges. Because our current facilities are inadequate to educate the professionals of tomorrow needed to address the national shortage of veterinarians, the CVHS must construct this new space to accommodate additional growth, attract and retain top quality students and meet the challenges and advancements in 21st century veterinary medicine.

The Academic Center will serve the instructional needs of third- and fourth-year veterinary students. The construction of the Center will occur concurrently with renovation of additional student study areas and a student commons located in the basement level of the BVMTH.

Approximately 30 VCS faculty specialists and 22 veterinary specialists-in-training provide medical and surgical care for over 11,000 large, small and exotic animal patients each year in the BVMTH. The faculty includes specialists in internal medicine, cardiology, surgery, ophthalmology, anesthesia, radiology, theriogenology and primary care. Veterinary care provided includes everything from primary care such as routine vaccinations to total hip replacement and 24/7 critical care.

The Opportunity
The Veterinary Academic Center will be built on the west side of the BVMTH. It will contain a “state of the art” 140 seat classroom and public space. Space in the BVMTH basement will be renovated for badly needed student study and commons areas.

The Investment
The Academic Center is estimated to cost $6 million. A gift of $3 million will provide an exterior naming opportunity for the donor. Interior public space and Student Auditorium naming opportunities are available from $500,000 to $2 million. Gifts of any size will be recognized through a donor acknowledgement wall.

On a typical day, there are more than 125 veterinary students training in the BVMTH. The only classroom holds less than 50 students.

The Academic Center is critical for the future of OSU’s veterinary center. The growing shortage of veterinarians calls us to expand enrollment in the clinical years of the DVM curriculum. We need the expanded space to be able to house more veterinary students. In order to maintain the high level of educational expertise the OSU veterinary graduates have come to expect, we need the Academic Center to recruit and retain the most highly qualified faculty and students. Graduating competent, confident, career ready veterinarians helps ensure our food supply is protected and the welfare of animals and humans alike is maintained.
