(May 13, 2009 Stillwater, OK) – Do you have a newly diagnosed diabetic cat? Jill D. Brunker, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM, Small Animal Internal Medicine, at Oklahoma State University’s (OSU) Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, is looking for up to 16 newly diagnosed diabetic cats for a clinical trial using a human drug. To qualify for the study, cats must be naïve diabetics and cannot have been treated with any diabetic management modalities.
This novel drug was approved by the FDA for type 2 diabetes therapy in humans and is proving to be a safe and effective treatment. Diabetic cats are very similar to people with type 2 diabetes, and this investigational drug could prove to be equally valuable in the cats’ treatment.
All costs related to hospital visits, examinations, diagnostics, and medications will be covered by the clinical trial for the duration of the study (3 months). The management of the cat’s diabetes will be at the highest standard of care. Estimated value per patient is $1,250.
