Paige Mackey, Class of 2012

Mackey won the internship by writing the winning essay on the role veterinarians play in public health and zoonotic disease prevention and control as part of the annual World Rabies Day competition amongst Student Chapters of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA).  The competition was held by the Alliance for Rabies Control in coordination with the CDC.

While at the CDC, Mackey will have the opportunity to participate in rabies research including diagnostic, analytic, policy analysis, and epidemiologic activities of the Rabies Laboratory and the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine.

“This opportunity is an important step for me both personally and professionally,” says Mackey.  “It will be a vital part of building the educational foundation that I will need to protect the public health.  I am honored to have been selected and proud to represent our veterinary college.”

Mackey is currently the president of the OSU veterinary center’s SCAVMA Chapter.  She also started a student public health and policy club to learn more about the opportunities available in the public health sector for graduates with a DVM degree.  Mackey is the daughter of Vickie Shivel and Steve Mackey both of Tulsa, Okla.
