(November 10, 2009 Stillwater, OK) – The Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences recently hosted Lonnie King, DVM, M.S., former director of the National Center for Zoonotic, Vector-Borne and Enteric Diseases at the Center for Disease Control. King presented “One Health: New Opportunities for Veterinary Medicine” as the Class of 1963 Distinguished Lecturer at the center’s Fall Veterinary Conference.
King discussed the reasons why new diseases are emerging and how it affects animals, humans and wildlife. Attendees listened as he explained that 16 zoonotic epidemics have occurred over the last 15 years and that approximately 1 billion people cross international borders yearly. King currently serves as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University, where he earned his BS and DVM degrees. He earned his MS degree in Epidemiology from the University of Minnesota. Approximately 500 veterinarians and veterinary technicians attended the annual conference held in the Wes Watkins Center on the OSU Stillwater campus.
The Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences is one of 28 veterinary colleges in the United States and is fully accredited by the Council on Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association. The center’s Boren Veterinary Medial Teaching Hospital is open to the public and provides routine and specialized care for small and large animals.
