STILLWATER, Okla.—The Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences recently held orientation for the first “class” to enter its Early-Admission Program (EAP), which is designed for entry-level undergraduate students who want to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. The goal of the program is to provide guidance, direction and mentorship as well as provisional admission for students with superior academic ability.

“We have 15 students who applied for provisional admission to the Center for Veterinary Health Sciences’ College of Veterinary Medicine during their first semester of undergraduate work,” explains Dr. Katrina Meinkoth, manager of veterinary medicine recruitment.

During orientation, students and their parent(s) were welcomed to the Veterinary Center. The students were given an EAP scrub top and an engraved folio. Each student was also assigned a faculty member and a current veterinary student as mentors. During the EAP students will be in frequent contact with their mentors to learn what will be expected of them as veterinary students and to become more aware of the profession.

The Early-Admission Program is available to all eligible freshman undergraduates enrolled in a 4-year comprehensive university in the state of Oklahoma, regardless of residency status. Eligible applicants must have achieved an ACT score of at least 27. Students must complete all pre-veterinary required courses and the undergraduate degree in 8 or fewer consecutive semesters. A cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 must be maintained each semester during undergraduate study.

“We are very excited about this program. The Early Admission program allows these students to assure their spot in the veterinary curriculum,” says Dr. Chris Ross, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. “The College is able to maintain contact during the pre-veterinary years, and students can focus on a veterinary career while they learn about all the professional opportunities that are available.”
