STILLWATER, Okla.—Dr. Robert W. Fulton received the 2008 Pfizer Animal Health Research Award at the Annual Awards Banquet for Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences. A professor in the Veterinary Pathobiology Department for 26 years, Dr. Fulton holds the McCasland Endowed Chair in Food Animal Research.

“I am honored to be selected for this award for my research. The Veterinary Center has been extremely supportive of our food animal research, particularly on bovine infectious diseases,” says Dr. Fulton. “My colleagues and administration, funding agencies, students, and cattle producers have contributed greatly to my success. I feel especially appreciative to be included among those other faculty recipients of the award. A special thanks to Pfizer Animal Health that makes this award to the OSU Center for Veterinary Health Sciences faculty and the company’s commitment to cattle research.”

Dr. Fulton earned his DVM degree from Oklahoma State University in 1966. After serving as Captain in the Veterinary Corps, U.S. Air Force, he earned a M.S. degree from Washington State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is certified by the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists.

Dr. Fulton’s research focuses on Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) infections. BVDV causes respiratory diseases, abortions, neonatal calf losses and persistently infected calves, all of which leads to major losses for Oklahoma’s cattle industry.

“Dr. Fulton has served the Veterinary Center and Oklahoma State University for 25 years as faculty member, department head, and scholar,” states Dr. Michael Lorenz, professor and dean of the Veterinary Center. “I am very pleased that his research on viral diseases of cattle has been recognized by our faculty with this award.”

The Pfizer Research Award is given annually. Faculty members are nominated by their peers and selected by the College Research Advisory Committee. The winner is chosen based on the nominee’s publication records, ability to obtain external research support, presentation of research data, involvement in scientific organizations and training of graduate students and/or residents.
