One of the awards given was the Dean Harry W. Orr Award. Lauren Cunningham, Class of 2009, received this award for her high academic achievement. Established in honor of the second dean of the Veterinary College, the $2,500 scholarship is given to a third year student based on academic performance during the first two years of the professional curriculum. She was also one of 17 recipients of the Salsbury Scholarship, which recognizes third year veterinary students with high academic achievement. Prior to the banquet, Cunningham was inducted into the Nu Chapter of Phi Zeta.
Cunningham decided at a young age that she wanted to become a veterinarian. She was influenced by the kindness of her grandma, who would frequently feed many of the neighborhood strays, which soon became her pets and then members of the family. Cunningham wants to care for the “little things” like animals that don’t have a voice of their own, just like her grandma did. She will soon begin her final year of the program, which consists of clinical rotations through the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital on the Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences’ campus in Stillwater. Cunningham is the daughter of Diane Gittiban and Louis Cunningham both of Arlington, Texas. |
