Lab research focus: Our research program focuses on the natural history and transmission dynamics of tick-borne diseases with a goal of elucidating the mechanisms that conspire to allow maintenance of disease agents in reservoir hosts and tick vectors. We concentrate our efforts on tick-borne disease systems important for canine and/or human health. Other research and professional interests include zoonotic parasites, particularly those transmitted from pets to people.
Student Project for Summer 2012:
American canine hepatozoonosis is an important, potentially devastating disease of dogs caused by Hepatozoon americanum. Dogs become infected via ingestion of infected vector ticks or paratenic hosts which have ingested ticks. In this project, the student will use PCR and sequencing to characterize Hepatozoon spp. infections in archived rodent tissues in an effort to identify natural paratenic hosts of H. americanum.
