| Job Description | Dear Interns, Have you ever dreamed of living in New England, living near the ocean, living near a progressive city, or just finding a practice with an upbeat, collegial environment where you can practice high quality medicine? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, I hope you will read on... Ocean State Veterinary Specialists(OSVS) is seeking emergency clinicians for our main hospital in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, as well as our satellite emergency clinic in the Southeastern Massachusetts town of Swansea. OSVS is a large and busy 24 hour emergency specialty referral center. The hospital is a 17,000 sq ft. facility offering referral and emergency services to the RI, eastern CT, and southern MA areas. There is not general practice associated with the hospital. Equipment includes digital radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, laparoscopy, mechanical ventilation, telemetry, and state of the art monitoring equipment. The staff includes specialists in internal medicine, surgery, radiology, emergency/critical care, oncology, ophthalmology and avian/exotics, as well as a group of experienced emergency clinicians. The hospital places a premium on continuing education. Daily "walk-through" rounds provide an opportunity for continuous learning. We have in-house education for doctors and technicians, and host referring veterinarians for continuing education forums several times a year. We have a successful internship in place as well as an emergency/critical care residency, which helps to promote a didactic atmosphere and gives the emergency clinicians and specialists ample opportunity to teach others. The support staff is highly trained and enthusiastic about continuing on mechanical ventilation, peritoneal dialysis, continuous thoracic drainage, etc. This position offers emergency clinicians a unique opportunity to work in a well-equipped, state-of-the-art facility, side-by-side with a large group of specialists. The emergency doctors do not just work evenings and weekends, they work many weekends "inpatient" shifts as well, giving them the opportunity to manage critical care patients and benefit from the referral hospital environment. The desire to continue learning and to participate in the teaching of interns and student externs is very important, and a good sense of humor is essential!! The satellite facility is a brand new building that opened in 2007, and was designed primarily with emergency medicine and critical care as the focus. The clinic is open 24 hours a day, with highly trained technicians, digiital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy , and a surgery suite, as well as an in-house lab and a well-equipped ICU. The clinicians at BSVES have accesss to the specialists at OSVS for consultation any day. There is a surgeon at BSVES twice a week, seeing appointments and performing surgeries on elective and emergency cases. OSVS specialists also visit regularly to perform ultrasounds and provide consults as needed. OSVS emergency clinicians provide surgical back up as needed. The emergency clinicans as BSVES rotate through weekday and weekend day and night shifts. They have the opportunity to do inpatient case management, provide follow-up for some involved cases, and interact with specialists and the rest of the high quality staff. A positive attitude and sense of humor are highly valued, as well as the willingness to continue learning new skills (including surgery). |
