To whom it may Concern:

The Lazy E Ranch, a worldwide leader in racing Quarter Horses, will offer a one year internship starting in June of 2009. Applicants must be a graduate veterinarian and successfully completed the National Board Exams and CCT. All applications must spend a minimum 10 day externship during the 2008-2009 seasons. Housing will be provided along with a salary to be commensurate with experience.

The Lazy E Ranch is a large scale horse breeding and sales preparation facility. On an annual basis, we breed approximately 1000 mares, perform 400 embryo flushes, foal out 250 mares, and condition 300-400 sales yearlings. The ranch is equipped with Eklin digital radiography, digital ultrasound, endoscopy, an in house hematology unit, nucleocounter, and semen evaluation equipment.

Internship will be based in theriogenology, neonatology, radiology, laboratory skills, lameness, and preventative medicine. Opportunities will be available for rotations at a surgical facility, ambulatory medicine, and an embryo transfer station.

Duties for the intern will include observation and participation in: ultrasonography and breeding management of approximately 700 mares; semen collection and preparation for fresh and cooled insemination for 10 stallions; diagnosis and treatment of disease and congenital maladies associated with neonatal foals; lameness examinations and radiological screening of approximately 230 yearlings; preventative health measures for the ranch horse population; collection and testing of laboratory samples; assistance in foaling of approximately 250 broodmares; Treatment of miscellaneous injuries and illness of resident horse population; supervision and teaching of 6-10 undergraduate interns;

This internship is a unique opportunity for the recent graduate to hone the necessary skills to be a successful equine practitioner, without the pressure of client scrutiny. The individual must self-motivated and independent, yet astute enough to ask for assistance when needed. The support staff is extremely knowledgeable and will be a tremendous asset to the intern. The experience will include a great deal of hands-on examinations and treatments.
