Job Description

PHILLIPS COUNTY VETERINARY CLINIC, PSCDR. JIM CURTISBox 1200 191 South, Malta, Montana, 59538406-654-1794 / pcvet@ttc-cmc.net Opportunity for Internship, Association, Purchase:The Phillips County Veterinary Clinic, PSC, a professional service corporation was established in Malta, Montana, in 1971, by Dr. Jim Curtis, (WSU 67). The PCVC was a founding partner in the limited liability partnership of Consolidated Veterinary Services LLP, with Dr. Anne Johnson who came to the area immediately after graduating from CSU in 1977. The Phillips County Veterinary Clinic, PSC, is looking for a veterinarian to begin taking over the responsibilities of Dr. Curtis who, after nearly 40 years of practice, is looking to slow down. A new graduate with an interest in buying into the practice would be welcome. Malta, MT is a remote rural community of some 2,000 people located in Montana's second largest county (- 6,000 square miles), in the heart of cow-calf country. While the entire county has only about 6,000 people, there are over 50,000 head of mother cows in the area. The practice is based on cow-calf production. The ranches are virtually all family owned operations (a very important factor in veterinary economics), well equipped, running from 200 to 600 head on up to 12-1400 head of mother cows. The practice works on a herd health concept with very little, if any, 'fire engine' activity involved. Individual cases are brought to the clinic for proper, professional, and comfortable care. (Those professors who have been in practice can appreciate this feature.) In the fall Drs. Curtis & Johnson each pregnancy test from 12 to 15 thousand head of cows and heifers. Some 6,000 to 8,000 heifers are Bangs vaccinated each fall and winter, and in the spring we BSE about 500 bulls. We offer complete and comprehensive professional care and service to our clients, consequently doing considerable consultation, and providing a complete and comprehensive inventory of products for preventative herd health care. Our clientele is firmly established, repeat clients, many with over thirty years history with the practice. Dr. Curtis is the staff veterinarian at the Glasgow Stockyards in Glasgow, MT at each Thursday's sale. While Glasgow is some 75 miles away, the entire distance is a corridor of excellent clients constantly needing drugs, vaccines, and pets dropped off and other services provided. The travel time is fast in this area and the working conditions and compensation at the yards are exemplary. Although we are a cow-calf based practice, we perform complete care for our equine clients, including reproductive work, as well as comprehensive medical and surgical care for our companion animal friends. The practice is supported by an excellent on-staff bookkeeper and professional accountants; income and expense figures are available for all activities to any seriously interested parties. If you are a junior or senior student interested in doing an internship with the intention of associating with the practice, or if you are a recent graduate looking to practice real cow-calf veterinary medicine please feel free to give me a call. Dr. Jim Curtis
