| Job Description | Dear Prospective Interns and Externs: Tryon Equine Hospital, an equine medicine, surgical, referral and ambulatory practice, is accepting applications for Internships and Externships. Our practice has the privilege of treating a wide variety of horse breeds as well as alpacas and other large livestock. Horses are our primary clientele. We would be delighted for you to consider serving your Internship and/or Externship with Tryon Equine Hospital. The hospital is located in the Foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Columbus, North Carolina, just 30 miles east of Asheville, North Carolina, and 20 miles west of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and is the only equine referral facility in this area. Are you a Veterinary Student who is interested in an Internship or Externship?Type of Practice:Tryon Equine Hospital is an equine medicine, surgical, referral and ambulatory practice. Our practice has the privilege of treating a wide variety of horse breeds as well as alpacas and other large livestock. Horses are our primary clientele.Facilities:The hospital has a fully equipped surgical suite, pharmacy and lab, radiology and ultrasound area, breeding shed, 12 stalls and one arena. There are three fully equipped ambulatory vehicles. Common procedures include arthroscopy, endoscopy, all types of soft tissue and airway surgery, fractures as well as repair. Diagnostic equipment includes 2 Eklin digital radiology systems, digital ultrasound, shockwave therapy, diode laser, video endoscopy, and gastroscopy. The hospital has stocks that are used for standing procedures, video endoscopy and gastroscopy, stem cell collection, reproductive evaluation, and laser surgery. This practice also provides our clients with artificial insemination services via fresh, cooled or frozen semen. M. - Practice Associate Case Load: Our veterinarians see a wide variety of medical and surgical cases. Our ambulatory case load is approximately 1,600 + horses per year. Our hospital case load (out patient and hospitalized patients) is approximately 2,450 + horses per year. Our clinic is open 24 hours, 7 days a week for referral and ambulatory emergencies. Regularly scheduled appointments occur between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. All hospitalized patients receive diagnostic evaluations and treatments each morning. Ambulatory calls are scheduled throughout the day, Monday through Friday. Philosophy of Practice's Internship: Tryon Equine Hospital strives to provide high quality and compassionate medical and surgical care for our client's horses. The Interns are considered an integral component of the practice. Our interns must be able to work as part of our team as well as working independently. Interns gain a great deal of hands-on experience and are very competent at the end of the internship in a variety of clinical diagnostics and therapeutic skills. Our internship positions will provide the ambitious, new post-graduate experience that will prepare you for a residency position, or the ability to enter successfully into a private practice. Prerequisites for an Internship Applicant: All prospective interns must be a graduate DVMIVMD and eligible for licensing in North Carolina and South Carolina. Your resume accompanied by a cover letter, three letters of reference, and your veterinary school transcripts are required for evaluation. Applicants that have visited our hospital and performed an externship will have an advantage in the selection process. Notification of Acceptance into Internship Program: Notification of acceptance will be made as soon as possible after evaluation, and interview. List of Internship Benefits: Tryon Equine Hospital provides an intern's AVMA liability insurance, health insurance and professional association dues. Compensation includes housing and salary. Employment Contract: A one year employment contract is required detailing the duties and responsibilities of the intern.Overview of Internship Duties: Our interns are responsible for hospitalized patients, intensive care cases, treatments health records and daily examinations. Interns will also be responsible for occasional anesthesia duties. We have 2 full time technicians who perform the majority of elective and after hours anesthesia. Daily duties include assisting with radiology, surgery, lameness and reproductive examinations. Each day, interns evaluate each case with one of our senior clinicians to make a daily plan for treatment. There are opportunities for ambulatory work as well. List of Intern Duties in Practice: Arrive by 7:00 am Have all case evaluations completed by 8:00 a.m. 1. Examine all equine in-house cases (i.e. TPRs, examine catheter sites; consult with the night technicians about any problems, etc.).2. Review charts for completion to date.3. Insure all treatments are complete. Consult with technicians and assist them when necessary.4. Have a status report for the doctor of each case by 8:00 a.m.5. Prepare patients for surgery (i.e. catheters, clipping, pre-op medications, etc.,before 8:00 a.m.). At 8:00 am Report to the doctor of the area of the hospital you are assigned to for that week. From 8:00 a.m. to approximately 5:00 p.m. you will work as directed by the doctor you are assigned to. At approximately 5:00 p.m., check in with the doctor on each equine inhouse case regarding any changes in orders and write orders for each case. In the section of the order sheet asking which doctor should be called, list the intern's name. Examine each case and have case evaluations done on all cases by 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Evenings Interns are responsible for a 9:00 p.m. barn check and will provide assistance with patient care to technicians as needed. We have full time evening technicians to provide overnight patient care. Emergencies are received by the intern and senior clinician on duty. Weekends and Holidays The same equine in-house patient checks done daily during the week. Rounds between 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. Saturday are given by the doctor on call. Interns will attend rounds on all weekends they are on duty, and are encouraged to attend rounds on their nonemergency duty weekends. Sunday a.m. Rounds at the discretion of the doctor on emergency duty and who has assigned rounds that weekend. Emergency Duty Schedule The intern will be on duty to receive emergencies with the senior clinician and will also participate in farm call emergency services. The intern will have approximately every third weekend off duty. Externship Program We are pleased to offer externships throughout the year. We have the ability to house two externs at one time. We feel our externship positions will provide you with thorough insight into and hands-on experience in a clinic setting, thereby, providing a solid foundation for future education and career development. Prerequisites for an Externship Applicant: All prospective externs must be a current veterinary student. List of Extern Duties: During your time with us, our externs are asked to please arrive by 7:30 am on your scheduled day, dressed to work around horses (i.e. work shoes/boots, appropriate pants, and a neat shirt with collar). It is recommended that you bring your lunch (the clinic has a refrigerator and water cooler) or plan to purchase lunch at a local restaurant. Our days are usually long and busy. As an extern, you will be expected to work seven days a week. If you are here for one month, you will be on-call three weekends out of four. If you are here for a lesser amount of time, you will be expected to work all weekends that you are with us. Some of this weekend duty will simply be rounds at 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. Other times, it will involve treatments and on-call duty in the evenings. Your level of experience and training will dictate your responsibilities and opportunities for hands-on work. These levels will be evaluated and outlined on an individual basis by the Barn Manager and Doctor on duty. During your stay, you will be scheduled on inhouse, surgery, and ambulatory cases.
