ASSISTANT DIRECTOR in Washington, D.C., D.C.

The American Veterinary Medical Association, a national not-for-profit association representing over 80,000 veterinarians nationwide, is seeking an Assistant Director for our Governmental Relations Division (GRD) office located in Washington, D.C. The GRD advocates the Association’s policies & positions on federal legislative & regulatory issues that influence animal & human health & advance the veterinary profession. Reporting to the GRD Director, the Assistant Director will be responsible for establishing & maintaining a communications network between AVMA members & Congressional staff, pertinent regulatory agencies, state veterinary medical associations/Societies, allied veterinary groups, & advocacy groups to support & advance the official policies of the AVMA. Will also be responsible for monitoring the activities of Congress & federal regulatory agencies while providing liaison activities for the profession to the federal government & applicable agencies on a variety of issues including: Animal Welfare; Human Animal Bond; Ownership/Guardianship issues; Aquaculture; Marine Mammal Act; Environmental issues; Pesticides issues; Zoo issues; and Wildlife. Requirements:
A bachelors degree in animal science or a related field is required. Advanced degrees (PhD related to Animal Welfare or DVM/ VMD) preferred. Must also possess demonstrated knowledge of, or experience with, the federal legislative/regulatory process, w/ excellent verbal & written communication skills. Some travel.
