INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Animal Specialty Group would like to make you aware of the rotating internship program available at our practice located in Los Angeles, California.

Description of Program:

The Animal Specialty Group (ASG) is a specialty referral practice and one of the finest in California. ASG is the first hospital in California to be certified as a specialty hospital by AAHA. The specialty staff is comprised of 3 board certified surgeons, 1 residency trained surgeon,

4 board certified internal medicine specialists (one of which is also board certified in emergency/critical care), a board certified neurologist, a board certified radiologist, a board eligible oncologist, 2 intern trained emergency doctors, and an intern trained rehabilitation therapy doctor. The program is further complemented by surgery, internal medicine, and neurology specialty internships as well as a surgical residency program.

A wide variety of cases are seen by ASG. Surgery cases include: orthopedics, neurosurgery, soft tissue and general surgery, and oncologic surgery. The internists see all medicine cases and have a special interest in cardiology, immune-mediated disease, and endocrinology. The neurologist has a special interest in encephalitis, neurosurgery (intracranial and spinal cord), and seizures.

The hospital is a modern state-of-the-art 12,000 sq. ft. facility which houses 10 exam rooms, 2 operating rooms, an isolation ward, a separate intern office/work area, staff doctor offices and a conference room facility (for rounds, lectures, and teaching). Other notable enhancements include in-house MRI and spiral CT systems. A partial list of equipment includes complete ASIF and total hip instrumentation, external fixators, fiberoptics (including arthroscopy, endoscopy, laparoscopy, and thoracoscopy), surgical microscope, CO2 laser, fluoroscopy, digital radiography, state-of-the-art anesthetic and monitoring equipment, 2 ultrasound-color flow dopplers, defibrillator, and surgical instrumentation for complex surgical procedures. Nuclear medicine is available through local facilities.

Interns will rotate through the core rotations of medicine, surgery, neurology, oncology and emergency/critical care. Interns will work directly with a board-certified specialist in a team approach. Duties include daily clinical rounds, office calls, surgical and medical case management, radiology, anesthesia, and special procedures (ultrasounds, endoscopy, MRI, CT, etc). Emergency/critical care duties include weekend and overnight patient care.

Didactic instruction includes daily clinical rounds where interns present cases and their diagnostic and therapeutic plans. Weekly journal club, surgery, medicine, and neurology teaching rounds, and radiology rounds are designed to formally teach interns. Monthly lectures by senior clinicians and monthly SCVMA lectures are also part of the teaching program. Interns are expected to present a formal lecture and are encouraged to prepare a manuscript for publication. Opportunities exist for presenting at national meetings.

We seek to achieve a good balance of education and experience to adequately prepare you for a successful career.  The yearlong internship program starts at the end of June.

The overall objectives of the internship are to:

- improve clinical and problem solving skills in medicine and surgery
- gain experience and instruction in advanced diagnostics, surgical and therapeutic techniques
- gain experience in client and professional communications
- prepare the intern for residency or clinical practice

Our internship program has been in existence since 1996, is widely recognized, and has a very successful track record with those individuals pursuing residencies. We have successfully placed rotating interns into internal medicine, surgery, neurology, oncology, dermatology, radiology, ophthalmology, emergency/critical care, and behavior programs.

Benefits include paid vacation, sponsored continuing education, paid licensure & liability insurance, subsidized medical insurance, including dental & vision, and uniforms.
