(www.vet.uga.edu/) at the University of Georgia invites applications and nominations for a fulltime academic position as Head of the Department of Population Health. The Department is comprised of 4 fiscally independent units: the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center, the Food Animal Health Management Program, the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study, and the Laboratory Animal Medicine Unit. The Population Health Department is fundamentally \\\"One Health\\\" focused and provides research and service programs in poultry, livestock, wildlife, and laboratory animal health and management; instructional programs in these fields for the professional veterinary curriculum; and post-graduate training programs for veterinarians emphasizing population health, epidemiology, and public health. The Department is seeking individuals with a solid foundation in academic veterinary medicine who are effective leaders and have a passion for fostering continued excellence in instruction, diagnostic service, and research. The department head is expected to contribute to the department\\\'s teaching in and out of the classroom. The successful applicant will join a team of 32 faculty, as well as staff and graduate students with interests including avian diseases, zoonotic diseases, wildlife disease surveillance, production animal medicine, and laboratory animal medicine. Close collaborations with the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network, the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the College of Public Health and the Odum School of Ecology provide opportunities for interdisciplinary studies. University resources such as the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center and the Animal Health Research Center and the Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences provide access to state of the art facilities and research support services. Proximity to and extensive interaction with nearby facilities such as the Centers for Disease Control, Yerkes Primate Research Center, Atlanta Zoo, Georgia Aquarium, USDA laboratories, and academic institutions such as Georgia Tech and Emory University ensure a broad range of collaborative possibilities. The Head is the Department of Population Health\\\'s chief administrative officer with responsibility for the instructional, research and service programs of the Department. Administrative responsibilities include budgetary oversight, promotion and hiring decisions, faculty and staff development, and strong leadership in providing a strategic vision for the Department. The Head is also the departmental representative to the College\\\'s Administrative Council and interacts with other department heads and unit directors to implement decisions affecting the College. The Head reports directly to the Dean. The University of Georgia is located in Athens, a vibrant community of 100,000 located in the wooded Piedmont hills of northeast Georgia. Offering the cultural amenities of an active University city, the surrounding area also offers a wide variety of choices for living environments. Athens is located 1 hour from Atlanta and its international airport, two hours from the Appalachian Trail, and four hours from the Atlantic coast. Requirements for the position include the DVM (or equivalent) degree and/or a doctor of philosophy (PhD or equivalent) in a biomedical science or related field. Desirable qualifications include 2 or more years of previous administrative experience and academic program development in instruction, research and service. Highly qualified applicants will possess a strong record of academic leadership, administrative experience, strong communication and leadership skills, and evidence of active participation in teaching, service, and research.
