Job Description

Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center of Kansas City (VSEC) is seeking

applicants for a one-year surgical internship beginning July 1, 2008. The primary goal

of this program is to prepare the selected individual for acceptance into a surgical

residency by establishing a solid foundation in the practice of veterinary surgery.

VSEC is a 20,000 square foot 24-hour, referral facility located in a suburb of Kansas

City. With a metropolitan population of two million people, the caseload is large and

varied. VSEC has board-certified specialists in the fields of Internal Medicine,

Cardiology, Oncology, Radiology, Ophthalmology and Dermatology. The intern will be

directly supervised by the Department of Surgery which includes four board-certified

surgeons and one neurologist. There is also a full staff of emergency veterinarians. On

site we have a physical therapy center supervised by a human physical therapist with

veterinary certification, and an ANTECH laboratory. There is a new helical CT machine,

nuclear scintigraphy and easy access to MRI. We will also be installing digital

radiography within the year.

Responsibilities of the intern include assisting the surgeons with all aspects of

managing surgical cases; including appointments, rechecks, bandage changes and

client communications.
A major emphasis will be placed on preoperative and

intraoperative decision making, as well as postoperative management. Development of

an in depth knowledge of surgical physiology and pathophysiology is expected

throughout the internship. The intern will also be responsible for organizing weekly

rounds including journal club, Slatter book chapters, radiology rounds and morbidity1

mortality rounds. Submission of a publication to a peer-reviewed journal is strongly

encouraged during the first half of the internship.

A key benefit of this program is the well balanced caseload in the Department of

Suraerv, with approximately 60%
Orthopedics/Neurosurgery and 40% Soft Tissue. We

are equipped for arthroscopy, laparoscopy and thoracoscopy, cemented and

cementless total hip replacement, TPLO, external fixation (linear, circular and hybrid),

interlocking nail and bone plating.

The annual salary is $25,000. No on-call duty is required during the internship.

However, the intern will be required to rotate through weekend and holiday duty in the

emergency service, averaging no more than one shift per week. Additional emergency

relief work will be allowed to supplement income. Benefits including health insurance

and practice liability will be provided. A Kansas State license is required, but will be

paid for by the practice. Ten days will be provided for personal vacation and interviews.

The intern will also be allowed to attend the annual ACVS Symposium. A stipend will be

provided to help with travel and expenditures.
